When it was announced that Mitch Cullin's 2005 Sherlock Holmes novel “A Slight Trick of The Mind” was being adapted, Holmes fans had very few ideas of who could take over the role of a 93 year old Holmes whose mind is slowly deteriorating. Luckily Director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, The Fifth Estate) decided to direct and his Gods and Monsters star Sir Ian McKellen (The Hobbit, X-Men Days of Future Past) was cast in the lead role alongside Laura Linney(The Fifth Estate) . As the movie is set to begin production soon, McKellen made one announcement and also revealed the first photo of himself in character as Sherlock Holmes. He announced that the name of the film had been cut to Mr. Holmes, shortening the title from A Slight Trick of The Mind. You can see the picture of McKellen Below, but something tells me the name change was pure marketing. The Sherlock Holmes brand is fairly popular these days with two successful television programs and a film franchise headlined by Robert Downey Jr. Benedict Cumberbatch took over the role of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock to rave reviews and award nominations and Jonny Lee Miller has also picked up the role for CBS in the rating success Elementary. I have yet to read the book but I am looking forward to seeing the legend that is Sir Ian McKellen embodying the role of Sherlock Holmes and also wanting to see what they can do with a character that has been done 3 different times in 3 different ways all very recently. Mr. Holmes has just began filming but has yet to get a release date according to IMDB.
